Environment

This plant tolerates some drought. This plant will grow in moist soil. Suitable soil is well-drained/loamy, sandy or clay. The pH preference is an acidic to slightly alkaline (less than 6.8 to 7.7) soil.

This plant has attractive foliage and attractive fall colors.

The flowers are fragrant and showy.

Culture Notes

This is an easy to grow, late blooming Clematis. In mild winters, foliage will not drop until late winter. Seed can be sown in spring and stem cuttings can be taken in summer.

When using a trellis, apply compost and cow manure to the base of this plant in early spring. Also use a soluble or 15-30-15 every two weeks from May through July.
