Culture Notes The flower stalks of this plant will rise above the foliage an additional 12 to 18 inches, and the flowers last only one day. If the flowers are left on the stalk, fruits will form. These fruit capsules are often used for dried arrangements. This plant naturalizes easily in woodland borders or grassy areas. Cut back to 6" in the fall, and remove dead foliage only in the spring. Needs moderate protection in the winter months. Propagate by division or by seed. The plant will bloom in the second year if planted by seed. Plants serve as butterfly nectar sources.
Leave black berries on for winter interest.
